On Tuesday, September 25, 2007, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme is hosting a 3-hour training from 1 to 3 p.m. for its new Cesar E. Chavez After School Service Learning Club -- Rio Del Valle Junior High -- a recipient of a grant provided by the collaborative efforts of the California Volunteers – Office of the Governor, Youth Service California, and the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation.
Cesar E. Chavez Service Clubs will provide middle school students the opportunity to learn about the life and values of Cesar E. Chavez, to examine the needs of their local community, to choose specific needs to address, and to plan and implement service projects that address those needs. The Tuesday workshop is designed to train educators and other facilitators to inspire and empower youth service club participants to make a difference in their communities. Led by Delores Abdella Combs, regional programs coordinator for the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation, the workshop offers an opportunity to gain information and new ideas for service-learning and youth involvement. Educators, community leaders and community members are invited to take part in this workshop.
Youth Service California representative, Jamie S. Dent, director of Cesar E. Chavez Service Programs will present a complete overview of the role of his organization – Youth Service California – a pioneer in youth service and service-learning.
Ernesto Durán, Director of School-Based programs for the Boys & Girls Clubs in Oxnard and Port Hueneme will direct the Rio Del Valle Junior High Cesar E. Chavez After School Service Club that begins this month and will continue through the end of the school year in 2008.
