We are pleased to announce the recipient of the 2007 Youth of the Year award for the Oxnard/Port Hueneme Clubs, Antonio Aguilar. An Oxnard native and a passionate boxer, Antonio joined the Club three years ago to train for the sport, where he has since been given the opportunity to participate in a variety of programs and activities offered here at the Club. He not only trains, but serves as a tutor and mentor to his peers at the Club.
Through his participation in our tutoring program, Antonio has continued to improve his grades, and thus has served as a role model for the younger athletes in the boxing program. Antonio aspires to become an architect, and the first college graduate in his family. “Antonio is as disciplined and dedicated to his education as he is with boxing,” asserts teen center staff, Sergio David. Beyond his dedication to school and boxing, Antonio is committed to serving his community, evident in his volunteer work at the South Oxnard Branch Library and his service to his Church, Mary Star of the Sea. If that were not enough to keep this 15 year old busy, Antonio often spends weekends assisting his father with their family business.
“Reaching for the stars, my future and my dreams have been a gift that the Club has helped me realize I can do,” said Antonio during his speech at the Ventura County Youth of the Year luncheon.
